    Meet at the trailhead parking lot. Take Hwy 169 S from Shakopee, turn R on 145th St., and continue past the Renaissance Fair parking lot. Trailhead is on the left.

    Habitat here includes a nice oak savannah, a creek, a river and some marsh. We’ll look for Indigo Bunting, Brown Thrasher, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Orioles, Eastern Bluebirds and check the river area for marsh and water birds. Bring a hat, water, bug repellant and snacks. Long sleeves and long pants highly recommended. Expect to walk several miles.

    Join on a search for nesting birds at the Black Dog Lake Unit. Some of the species that we may find include Bell's Vireo, Willow Flycatcher and Sedge Wrens.

    Early June is a prime time to take a hike at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve. Bobolink's, Grasshopper and Henslow's Sparrows can be found on the trails while Wood Thrush, Acadian Flycatcher and Hooded, Cerulean and Blue-winged Warblers can be found.

    Virginia Rail, Sora's and Marsh Wrens can be observed from the board walk. Five species of woodpecker, Eastern Wood-Pewee and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers can be found along the Bluff Trail.

    Join us for the annual potluck picnic (eaten inside, with tables and chairs) at Wood Lake Nature Center 6710 Lake Shore Dr. Richfield, MN 55423 – between Lyndale and 35W, just south of 66th St.

    The center is reserved from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. We’ll set up from 4:30-6:00, eat at 6 and we’ll go birding afterwards. (You are welcome to drop off your food any time after 4:30 and bird before dinner!) Please bring a salad, fruit, main dish or dessert to share. Lemonade will be provided.

    To help make this a minimal-waste event, please bring your own plates, cups and cutlery. Be sure to bring your binoculars for birding before or after the potluck. This is a nice way to get acquainted with Wood Lake if you haven’t birded here before. It can be a great spot for finding a variety of spring migrants in the woods, marsh or on the lake.

    The rich biological diversity of Pine County and the surrounding area provide a bonanza of birding opportunities for experienced birders and those just getting started. The Audubon Center of the North Woods is located in a unique transition zone where the eastern deciduous forest meets the northern conifer forest with pockets of western prairie. This first-class weekend birding festival gives participants a chance to visit a wide variety of habitats that support myriad bird species.

    Work on your grassland sparrows – by sight and by ear -at this Refuge unit in Carver County, south of the town of Carver. In past years, Lark Sparrows have nested here and we’ve seen Grasshopper and Henslow’s Sparrows in the upland prairie above the Education Center. We’ll also check out trails along the Minnesota River. We’ll bring extra binoculars and a scope.

    Warblers are our prime target and Tettegouche State Park and surrounding Lake County offer a wide variety, including the elusive Black-throated Blue Warbler. We will also search for Eastern Whip-poor-will, Black-backed Woodpecker, Alder and Yellow-bellied flycatchers.     Program intended for participants and family members ages 9 and up.

    The forests, fields, ponds and lakes of Minnesota’s North Woods hold exciting environmental lessons for you and your grandchild. Search for reptiles and amphibians, meet impressive birds of prey, discover the hidden life of beavers and learn about the natural behavior of wolves. Feel the rush of adventure on our rock climbing wall and high ropes course, and enjoy making traditional Ojibwe crafts.

    Highlights

    • Take field trips to the North West Fur Post, where you learn about a colorful chapter in Minnesota’s history, and the Hinckley Fire Museum, interpreting one of the most destructive fires in history.
    • Examine pond water samples under the microscope to see what tiny creatures are living in them.
    • Canoe on beautiful Grindstone Lake, swoosh down a zip line and learn about outdoor survival.
