Bird Watching Trek

Explore some of the best refuge units for bird watching in the winter season. We will spend time on these walks searching for birds that spend the winter on the refuge or are late migrants. We will study the different species of birds we observe and learn about some other local locations to search for birds during the winter. Birders of all skill levels are welcome to attend thee walks. Bring along your binoculars and favorite field guide. Please dress appropriately for the weather. In the event that the program needs to be canceled, those registered for the walk will receive an email letting you know about the program cancelation. Date and Time: Sunday, December 10 from 8:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Location: Bass Ponds Trailhead – 2501 86th St. E., Bloomington, MN 55425

Registration Information: Registration required on SignUp, which is available on the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuges Website.
Please indicate in your registration if you would like to receive a birding summary and species list from the walk. This program is capped at 25 participants.

Activity Level: Easy-active, we will walk slowly and make frequent stops.

Meet Us: At the Bass Ponds Trailhead parking lot. Please consider carpooling with others in your party due to limited parking.

What to Bring: If you have them, bring along binoculars and a favorite field guide. This program is held entirely outdoors, please dress appropriately for the weather. A cancellation notice will be sent via email to registered participants in the event of severe weather.

Accessibility: There are restrooms available in the lower parking area for the Bass Ponds. This walk takes place on mostly flat ground on paved trails, wooden boardwalks, and natural surface paths. Note there is a steep hill at the beginning and end of the walk, that takes you down to the lower parking area.

Program Leader: This program is led by Volunteer Naturalist Craig Mandel. Craig has been leading bird walks on the refuge for more than two decades. For questions about these walks, please contact Craig at 952-240-7647.
